Epic to FTC: Google Search+ is violating users' privacy (The Guardian)

On Tuesday this week, Google launched the world’s biggest social algorithm called “Search Plus Your World.” It certainly caught the search marketing industry’s attention… and also the US government’s!
“Search Plus Your World” blends social information such as your Google+ profile, public posts and comments and business pages into your Google search results. It’s not available in Europe and Asia yet, but is likely to be making an appearance soon. Does it worry you that your private data would be searchable without you knowing it? It worries the US government, which is why the new feature raised the US privacy regulators’ concerns about the potential antitrust violations.

If your ad is showing in position 1, it means it’s the first ad at the top of the organic search results, right? WRONG! When you add a new keyword and it’s assigned a low Quality Score, it means the keyword has performed poorly in your account, right? Wrong again! If you’re wondering why then this is definitely worth a read. Remember, it’s not called a misconception until you realised you had it wrong...
